What it does

SaySpell is a free, voice-powered spelling tool. Press and hold the microphone button, say a word aloud, and the correct spelling appears instantly — letter by letter.

It supports both UK English and US English, so whether you're writing "colour" or "color", "theatre" or "theater", you'll always get the right answer for your audience. Toggle between variants using the buttons in the top right.

Hold the button for longer and the tool also shows a definition, part of speech, example sentence, and etymology — useful when you want to understand a word, not just spell it.

Why we built it

Spelling checkers have existed for decades, but they all require typing. If you don't know how to spell a word, typing it into a search box is the problem, not the solution.

SaySpell takes the opposite approach: speak naturally, get the answer immediately. No keyboard, no search results to sift through, no guessing.

It's particularly useful for people who struggle with spelling, those learning English as a second language, children building their vocabulary, and anyone who simply wants a faster answer.

How it works

The tool uses your browser's built-in speech recognition — the same technology used by voice assistants. No audio is sent to our servers; recognition happens within your browser directly.

Word information — definitions, examples, and etymology — is sourced from Wiktionary, the free collaborative dictionary, via an open-source dataset. This data is used under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike licence.

Is it free?

Yes. SaySpell is completely free to use with no registration, no account, and no subscription required. It works on any modern browser on desktop, tablet, or mobile.

The site is supported by advertising. If you find it useful, simply using it is the best way to keep it free for everyone.
